Can't Attend a Trade Show? Here's What to Do

By Shirley Frazier

Shirley George Speaking at the L.A. Mart

Dividing your time between marketing, filling orders, and attending trade shows to find exciting products and exotic tastes for your baskets is often a difficult process.

Many gift basket designers choose to stay close to their stores due to time and/or budgetary constraints. This dilemma can leave a big void in the items offered to customers who count on you to surprise them with every order.

But how can you take time away from business to attend some of the best trade shows when many are thousands of miles away? Here are two solutions.

1. Speak with suppliers. Call wholesalers that you work with regularly that will be exhibiting at upcoming shows. Ask your contact what they will be selling and what show specials will be offered. Many items will not be in the latest catalog, and your contact can give you a "heads up" on new merchandise.

The contact might also allow you to take advantage of the show special, especially if you are a regular customer and you explain that you will not be able to attend the show. The request is worth a try and could save you freight or merchandise dollars.

2. Review trade magazines. Gift and gourmet trade magazines feature new items in each issue and are an insightful resource that introduces you to what will be in style in terms of colors and trends.

Not everything will work for your baskets or region, but some ideas are easily worked into your designs. Review older magazines for another look at what's in.

Don't let your budget keep you from finding new products to refresh your designs. Your customers are counting on you be their trend-setting gift consultant.

If you can attend a trade show, here's a list of upcoming gift basket classes and events.
